The skills acquired in this Master degree promote an understanding for language that will allow students to work in jobs that demand the analytical competence needed in order to understand how and why language is used in certain situations. Essential for the understanding of communication are the questions of communicative behaviour and how objectives are negotiated in interactive situations; what conventional patterns are being followed; what social functions are related to certain statements and what historical, social and anthropological conditions they are dependent on (affiliation to a group and culture, grade of formality, situation of statement, etc.).
Such topics involve sociolinguistics, research of conversation, variety linguistics, anthropological linguistics, dialectology and research of language history.
